Be A Book Worm

Have you ever started a good book and just can't put it down? The fun in turning one more page in anticipation of what's to come.  Well today I have another direction that books can take you in... yes, you guessed it- decorating.
I have always been a fan of using old family books such as year books, music books, childrens books or cook books to decorate with.  They really do add to your layering and can bring height or color or evoke a warm memory.  I have several family Bible's that have special meaning to me and are jammed with writing from family members as well as old sermon notes (thanks Dad)!! I also have some beautiful music books from my grandmother that I love to display during the holiday season.

But my latest adventure has been just a bit different,  I recently went to one of my favorite stores because they were giving free books away.  FREE. OLD. HARDBACK BOOKS.  It's too bad I was not this excited about books in school! Ha! Ha!  Anyway, we made a beeline to get as many as we could stuff in the van... (I love our van) and this is what I did with them.

And this is the final outcome...

I started by giving them a good scrub down, making sure to get any dust off.  Then I used some ASCP  that I knew would work with the bedroom color scheme and off  I went.   I finished them with some Valspar glaze to give that old antiqued look.  It really is a very simple project but it does take some time. I recommend using a big space where you can lay them out all at once.  Most books take two coats of paint.
I just love how they turned out and I will be able to use them in many areas of my home for years to come!

I want that bowl with the blue rings!!!

Love, love, love the book idea. How do you get the titles to stand out while painting? Do you paint around the letters?

Beautiful as always!!

Thanks Mel, for your sweet comments. After I have painted the books, I simply distress the areas I want to be seen with a fine sandpaper. It the words are embossed on the book cover you can just highlight that area with a bit of stain to bring out the words. Hope that helps!
